    New and Noteworthy Publication

    "Risk facotrs for drug dependence among out-patients on opioid therapy in a large US health-care system." Boscarino, JA., et. al.  Addiction 105, 1776-1782. 

    This comprehensive survey of electronic health records in a large health care system elucidated important risk factors for the development of drug dependence in outpatients prescribed opioids. Important risk factors include : age<65, opioid abuse history, high dependence severity, major depression, and psychotropic medication prescription.  The presence of a number of factors in an individual raises the risk of drug dependence substantially.

    Addressing Substance Use Disorders in the Patient Centered Medical Home

    Parity, health care reform and the patient centered medical home are in, but will substance abuse be in with them?

    I am the liaison from ASAM to the Primary Care Patient Centered Collaborative and on their behavioral health subcommittee. Recently I attended the annual Society of Teachers of Family Medicine meeting and had a workshop on Addressing Substance Use Disorders in the Patient Centered Medical Home. I am organizing a symposium on the subject for next year's ASAM Med-Sci.
